Guitar Tube Amps - 6L6 Vs EL84
When it comes to guitar amps, there are a million choices. There are combos, practice amps, stacks, half stacks, separate heads, separate cabinets, modeling amps, acoustic amps, low wattage, high output, 1-12, 2-12's, 4-10's, 1-15, 10 watt, 30 watt, 40 watt, 100 watt....and the list goes on!
But beyond all that, the first really important choice to make is whether to go with a solid state amp, or a tube amp.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both - and that discussion is for another day. But if you decide to go with a tube amp, you will want to be aware of the differences between the two predominant tube types that are available.
Within every tube amp there are typically two tube classifications - pre-amp tubes, and power amp tubes.
Pre-amp Tubes:
These are the smaller tubes and there can be anywhere from 2 to 4 or more of them. These tubes power the "pre" section of the amp and are responsible for producing the boost or distortion, and adding "warmth" to the tone.
Power Amp Tubes:
These larger tubes carry the load of the amp and are responsible for the main output signal.
Today we are looking at the differences in the two main types of "power amp" tubes, 6L6's and EL84's.
There are significant differences in the sound produced by power amp tubes labeled "6L6" and "EL84" - and when shopping for a guitar amp you will want to consider these carefully according to the style of music you are playing.
6L6 Tubes
If you are playing blues, country, southern rock and some rock music - 6L6's may be your best choice. They produce a cleaner, warm "vintage" tone that is suitable for these styles of music. These tubes are closely associated with the "Fender" sound and are stock tubes on most of these amps.
EL84 Tubes
These will produce a boosted mid range tone and have a history of "breaking up" earlier for a distinct distortion sound. They are preferred by many guitarists that lean toward a heavier rock or metal style. EL84's are closely associated with the "Marshall" sound and are stock tubes on most of these amps.
One or the Other
In most cases, a guitar amp is built to accept either 6L6's - or EL84's, and you will need to be aware of which, and the nuances of each before making a decision.
There are, however, some boutique amps, such as some of the Mesa Boogie models, that come with both. These come with a switch that allows you to change between the two, and opens up a whole new range of tonal possibilities. Of course, you'll also have to open up your wallet because they don't come cheap.
Forget the Rules
Even though we have discussed the two power amp tube types according to the style of music that they are most suited for, ultimately every guitarist is unique in their approach to playing. As a result, like most anything relating to the art of interpreting music, there are absolutely no rules.
I have known blues and southern rock players that got killer tones out of Marshall amps with EL84's. And, conversely, there have been plenty of players using Fenders loaded with 6L6's playing hard rock and heavy metal.
The point is, a serious tube amp can be a pricey investment, and the key is to be aware of the power amp tube differences going into it so you can make an informed decision based on what works best for you!

The Last Word in DJ Tech - The USB Turntable
DJ'ing, like everything else in this world, has been made better through progress. So much so that an old school DJ, someone who just knew records, record decks and a mixer, would struggle even to work out what half the kit used by a modern DJ is, let alone what it does or how to use it. So what, one wonders, would the old school have made of the USB turntable?
What, for that matter, do we? What is a Universal Serial Bus turntable and why would anyone want one? Two reasons, actually - one, to get all that lovely vinyl immortalised on CD; and two, to add a bunch of computer snap to a vinyl set. Let's take our points in order, first stopping to describe what the Universal Serial Bus turntable actually does.
The USB (that stands for Universal Serial Bus, which is a posh way of saying "that bit on the side of the computer that you can plug stuff into") turntable is a normal vinyl playing turntable that plugs into a USB port on a computer. The USB turntable sends the signals coming down the turntable arm and wire into the PC or laptop, in the same way that a regular turntable sends signals to a mixer. The computer effectively becomes the mixer, which means, as noted, two things - one, you can transfer all that vinyl into audio files and burn them to CDs; and two, that you can use programmes on the computer to mix and affect the music playing from the vinyl.
So: if one plugged a USB turntable into a computer, and then plugged that computer into a PA system, one would be able to use all sorts of flashy digital effects and programming to enhance one's set. These days, DJ programmes can do just about anything - from correcting slight mismatches in beats to full on scratching and juggling. Plus, of course, the entire effects one has access to - simple sound washes, sine waves, and the other lot. Take one or even a pair of Universal Serial Bus turntables, add a computer with a good DJ programme on it, and one has a full club sound system waiting to happen.
Immortalising vinyl on CD via a USB turntable is actually a pretty good idea. Even if one wishes to keep one's vinyl pristine and not get rid of it, having it all in the computer rather than in seventeen metal cases makes travelling to do DJ shows a lot easier. Why waste petrol, space and time carting all those records around when one can simply throw a laptop and a PA in the back of the car and get going?
There will of course be some vinyl junkies who disagree. The point holds even for them, though. At this end of the scale, the USB turntable can become a brilliant way to teach the art of DJ'ing without having to endanger those precious records. One simply records the vinyl via the USB link, practices with the files and the turntable (minus record) - and switches back to records when one feels confident enough.

How to Improve Your Studio PC's Audio
Are you trying to record music and sick and tired of the poor quality sound coming from your PC? Follow these tips to get better sound from your computer.
Buy Better Speakers
Better quality speakers are a must as the ones supplied with your computer are usually of poor quality. Don't be fooled by the "watts" sign on the boxes as they are usually in "PMPO" and these are very low in quality.
Look for studio monitors that are rated in "Watts RMS" as they are higher quality speakers and also check that they are above 60 Watts RMS per speaker bass driver. I prefer above 80 Watts RMS, but it all depends on how much you can spend on the speakers.
If you really want to splash out, go for Active speakers. These are speakers with built in amplifiers.
Get a Better SoundCard
Again, soundcards supplied with PC's are usually of low quality and its usually the onboard sound which is part of the motherboard. If your computer is using the onboard sound setup, then a soundcard is a diffinate must.
If you are a home user and want surround sound then the Soundblaster cards are made for you. But musicians must go for external audio interfaces as these provide better quality sound and also proper inputs for recording instruments and vocals.
Get a Better Amplifier
If you have decided to use studio monitors that dont have their own amplifier (also known as passive speakers) then you are going to have to splash out on a "studio amp" or "reference amp".
Again, look for the "Watts RMS". The higher the Watts the better the amplifier. But, be sure never to turn your amplifier up too much otherwise you will have to spend more money on new studio monitors.
Fill Your Speaker Stands
When you buy speaker stands you will notice that they are hollow. You should fill the stands with sand or steal/lead shot. The reason for this is to improve the sound by making the bass solid and also to stop the stands from moving back and forth when the bass kicks in as this can change the acoustics as the sound hits different parts of the walls. But, please make sure that if you use lead shot that none of it can escape, you dont want to cause lead poisoning.

Bettering Your Gear Rig - Satellite Internet For Musical Shopping
Those who are diehard musicians often find their disposable income going to every possible piece of gear imaginable. Much to the confusion and occasional frustration of partners and spouses, musicians who are serious will spend hours coming pawn shops and thrift stores if there is a particular piece of equipment that they have their eye on. And if you're ever in a musician's home and wonder how they could ever possibly need that much stuff, don't forget to hide your surprise when they start talking about how incomplete their rig happens to be. The world of musicians is a confusing one, especially when you're dealing with gear heads.
And it's not just a city thing to be that into music. People who relocate to more rustic locales are often just as into adding to their collections. And for those who are constantly in the market to find that just-right piece, stepping beyond the forums is a piece of cake. Everywhere from EBay to Harmony Central to Craigslist has a way to stumble across what might possibly be the guitar or drum kit that will absolutely change your life. And anyone who wants to ditch their old Technics turntables in favor of switching to Pioneer CDJs will find selling old gear just as easy as buying it.

An Electric Guitar Beginner Tutorial
This tutorial is for the electric guitar beginner who wants to skip learning to play chords on a nylon string guitar and go straight to the rock 'n' roll. If your musical tastes tend towards jazz, rock or metal, then you will probably want to start learning on a six-string electric. Beginner models are not expensive but you will have to take into account the cost of an amplifier.
When it comes to buying an instrument, beginner guitar players need to stay away from the bargain basement guitars you can buy from department stores. Go to a music store to buy an electric guitar so you do not end up with inferior hardware and electrical components.
If you are limited by the amount of money you can spend on an electric guitar beginner model, look for the Squier brand. They are generally adequate as far as components and construction go and they are modelled on the Fender Strat that is so popular amongst electric guitar players.
Set up your guitar in the space you intend to use for practice so that it is ready for every opportunity to play. If you do not have enough power outlets in your room so that your amp can be plugged in all the time, get yourself a powerboard. As you get into a practice routine, you will realize that there are plenty of distractions to take you away from focused practice time, so eliminating having to set up your guitar will be a great start.
Your practice time should be at least half an hour a day, especially in the beginning. As an electric guitar beginner you will need to acquire the muscular habits involved in getting the correct posture for guitar practice as well as building up the callouses on your fingertips. During the process of toughening up your fingers you will need to be careful because the steel strings of an electric guitar can have a tendency to slice your fingers which might mean you will have to take a break from playing while they heal.
As an electric guitar beginner, your posture will need to get some work but bear in mind that all adjustments to how you sit, stand or hold the guitar will need to be accompanied by efforts at relaxing your body, otherwise any self imposed rigidity will be bad for your guitar playing. The main thing is to keep your back straight. That's where your arms and hands will work from. The way to keep your back straight without forcing it is to lean forward a little, and don't slump. If you practice for half an hour a day this will be enough time for your body to get into the habits of relaxed guitar playing.

"What's in a Name?" original song/live looping jam w/Mbrace stands, Taylor, Ibanez, & Fender Guitars
Here's the jam (original song...made up on the spot) I did at the Fall Festival sponsored by CCWC at SIms Park in New Port Richey Florida. I already posted a version, but here I edited out the mistakes I made in creating the loop at the beginning and zoomed in a bit via my computer program. Working Out What You Need For Your Home Recording Studio
An important consideration when looking to set up a 'home recording studio' is how you will use it. You will need to work out how many things you want to record or plug in at any one time or you might wind up with unnecessary gear-or not enough!
Let's look at a typical example of 'Vinnie' the guitarist who has a desire to show his 'band' how the songs should be played.
No matter how many times he's tried to explain, they never quite get it right, so the only way he can see to achieve this is to record it all 'properly' himself.
What does Vinnie need?
He needs to record a basic drum pattern - nothing fancy - he wants to record two electric guitars, an acoustic guitar, he wants to record a bass guitar and record a main vocal and two backing harmonies.
Vinnie of course will not do all this at once, so even though he needs to record 9 things does he need 9 channels?
No.
All he really 'needs' is a maximum of 4 inputs- two with pre-amps. He will also need a microphone to sing into and to record his acoustic guitar, we will assume he has a guitar amp simulator to record the electric guitars and bass and that he has a physical drum machine or one inside his computer or stand alone hard disc recorder.
Vinnie could easily walk down to his music store or get online and find what he needs to get the job done. He could look at a computer recording package with appropriate software and specialised sound card for audio recording. Some companies provide these all in one packages Lexicon, M-Audio, Pro-Tools and Presonus are good brand names to look at as a starting point, but be aware that recording onto a computer can be a frustrating experience if you're not computer savy.
Vinnie's other alternative is the stand alone hard disc recorder with a built in mixer section. Any of the offereings from Fostex, Yamaha or Boss/Roland would take care of his needs, at this point Vinnie just wants to get his ideas onto the physical plain as quickly as possible so others can hear them- so he'll probably need a CD burner thrown in to the equation unless his machine can link up to a computer-as a number of them now can do.
Now let's look at another example of Barabra who plays in a four piece folk/rock group. They want to record a couple of songs for CD release. All the instruments her band uses are acoustic; Double Bass, Violin ,Guitar and Banjo.
Three of the group also sing. Now Barabara is lucky enough to have a large secluded garage space available for her group to rehearse in and given they don't annoy the neighbours by making too much noise she wishes to record the band as a 'whole' for the best vibe-what will she need?
4 X Instrument Microphones or D.I. [direct injection] boxes
3 X Vocal microphones
8 inputs with Microphone Preamps
Capacity to record on 8 channels at once.
There are some limitations with stand alone recorders, some of them will only let you record on 2 channels at once, another thing to be aware of is the 'quality' of the recordings.
Some years ago during the 'compression algorythm' wars, clever boffins discovered that our ears can 'fill in' missing information, in the same way that you can look at the scrambled letters of a word but are still able to decipher what it is.The boffins kept removing bits of what our ear was hearing until they came up with a formula [algorythm] that fooled our ears most of the time. These are known as 'compressed' formats as they 'squish' the sound in such a clever way that we don't notice.
Almost all commercial and home recording computer software will record 'linear'[non-compressed] files to your computer hard disc. Pro-tools,Logic Audio, Cubase, Sonar all do this. Later on when you 'mix-down' your songs you can turn them into mp3 files for podcast or to load to your portable digital music player. Adobe Audition and Steinberg's Wavelab are two programs I can think of that record direct mp3 files- but they are not 'full function' multitrack programs.
When we deal in compressed formats- mp2 mp3 etc, 'unneccessary' information is removed making the file sizes smaller [and hence downloads faster]- so these are 'compressing' the files. The advantage for the home recordist is that less hard disc space is needed.
A consideration when looking at stand alone recorders is to ask the question- do I want compressed or uncompressed audio. If you have any intention of turning these recordings into something for release then the uncompressed format is the best- you will lose some quality by using a compressed format, but your ideas will be captured quickly for you to work on later. Also bear in mind that a number of hard disc recorders can later transfer data to a computer software system for more elaborate processing so if you use a non-compressed recording format you will retain the quality of your recording.
Now when Barabara popped down the music store to express her needs she told the sales person that, "she wants a high quality recording of her group but I have no idea about computers" so the salesman suggests a stand alone unit with eight inputs that records the data in a non-compressed format. As she doesn't have a huge budget she chooses to hire in most of the microphones for this recording session. The man at the shop suggests she uses condensor microphones for the instruments and dynamic Shure sm58's for the vocals.
A crucial quality consideration at this point is the 'pre-amp'. What does that do and why is it so important you ask?
After your microphone has done the incredible job of sorting out sound pressure waves and converting them into electrical signals, they arrive via microphone cables at the 'pre-amp'-a short way of saying pre-amplifier. For years I struggled to really 'get' what a pre amp did, unitl I understood this:
When the microphone puts out a signal it is very very very very tiny. I now call this 'mouse level'. Once it's gone through a pre amp it becomes 'elephant level', something that our mixing consoles and digital recorders can use easily.
Hear this:
Depending on the quality of the compoments used, this amplification process can make or break the quality of the recorded sound. A bad pre-amp will add hiss and noise to your recording
Most stand alone recorders and computer sound card interfaces have 'adequate' microphone preamps. To make your recordings 'shine' I would suggest getting an 'outboard'[separate component] pre-amp, though having said that the pre-amps in high end Yamaha consoles are gaining a very good reputation. Focusrite/Joe Meek/Avalon/Tc Electronics are great brands. Currently I use a Focusrite Twin-Trak pro, a device specifially for home recording enthusiasts.
To sum up, our friend Vinnie will probably be quite happy with an off the shelf hard disc recorder with 4 or so inputs that records 'compressed' files because he is only trying to show his band colleagues a 'rough' idea of how he hears things.
Barbara who is not computer savy is looking for a more polished end product and wants to record her group in the best quality for a CD the band will release, hence she needs to record 'linear' [non-compressed] data and will look for a unit with the best quality pre-amps she can buy.

Blink 182 - A Short History
Blink 182 is made up of band members Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus, and Tom Delonge. Travis was brought into the world in San Diego November 14, 1975. He received his first drum set when he was young and began playing, becoming a skilled drummer. Travis played in many different bands before settling down with Blink 182, such as the ska band the Aquabats, where he went by the name "Travis Baron Von Tito." He sports tattoos and piercings, all of which have personal meaning to him, and he also is the owner/operator of his own shop, Famous Stars and Straps.
Mark was born in California March 15, 1972. He went through his parents' divorce when he was 14 years old and ended up living with his dad in Washington. He earned his first amp and bass when he was 15 for helping his dad repaint the house. Who would have guessed that he first wanted to be an English teacher? He is the one in the band with the least amount of piercings and tattoos.
Tom came into the world in San Diego December 13, 1975. He got used to hard work at an early age. In his hometown, he spent his time working on a construction site and at Gary's Chicken and Ribs. He even got to be in a movie with a one-liner as a fast food clerk.
The story of Blink 182 first started in 1992, with Scott Raynor (drums), Mark Hoppus (bass, vocals), and Tom Delonge (guitar, vocals). The name of the band then was just "Blink." They went for Blink 182 when the threat of another band with the same name came up. Even though there are rumors and ideas floating around about what exactly "182" stands for, it was actually random.
Their brutal, heartfelt lyrics have earned them a huge following. In 1995 they came out with their first full album, "Cheshire Cat," and then "Dude Ranch" followed in 1997. This album was the one that helped them gain widespread commercial success. This is also when Scott went back to college and left the band. He was replaced by Travis Barker, who used to be one of the Aquabats.
At the end of 1998, the band quit touring to make their next album, "Enema of the State." This was even more popular than "Dude Ranch" and helped get the band's sound out there to new groups of listeners.
Nine years on, the band is still as popular as ever and look set to become one of the classic pop punk bands of our time.

Guitar Capo
A capo is a clamp that you can use on different frets of the guitar to change the pitch of the open strings. Each fret on the guitar is a half step. If you place the capo on the 1st fret, all of the open strings will sound a semi-tone higher than normal, this makes changing the key of a song easy.

Guitar Slide
The guitar slide is a tube of some hard material about one to two inches long. Commonly, it's made from glass and metals. Each type of guitar slide has distinct characteristics, tonality, and overall sound. The guitar slide is pressed lightly against the strings so as not to touch the strings of the fret, producing a sustained tone which can be varied in pitch by moving the slide across the neck. A quick side-to-side motion is often used in this way to generate vibrato.

Drumming for the Shamanic Journey
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is the oldest way in which humanity has sought connection with Creation. The origins of shamanism go back at least 40,000 - 50,000 years to Stone age times. All of us have evolved from shamanic cultures, it is our roots wherever we live.
A shaman knows that all things are alive and 'walks with one foot in the everyday world and one foot in the spirit world'. Contemporary shamanism is the application of these ancient timeless ways to life here and now.
Shamanism is not a belief system. It is a path to knowledge which is gained through experience of life, through rituals, ceremonies, prayers and meditation, trials and tests. Knowledge is something that works, that stands up to the test of time, that is known from the inside.
Cosmology of the shaman
Shamans divide non-ordinary reality into three other regions, the upper, lower and the middle worlds. Each has its own characteristics and whilst each individual traveller experiences initially their own version, once one becomes a proficient journeyer, it is amazing just how connected we all are at these levels.
The Lower world is the place of instinctual knowing where our animal-like powers reside and where we can find practical earthly help and guidance.
The Upper world is the word of spirit teachers, cosmic beings, great wise elders, ancestors who appear usually in human form. Their help and guidance is often perceived to be more general and philosophical.
The Middle world is both the everyday physical world that we live in, the world of ordinary reality, the tonal, and also a parallel non-ordinary version of our world.
It is a CD specifically made for shamanic journeying, and to do this, the drums have to be as monotonous as possible and maintain a consistent beat between 205 to 210 beats per minute. At this specific beat, the brain is stimulated to synthesise natural beta-endorphins which facilitate a person to move into what is known as the 'second attention', an altered state of awareness, or shamanic state of consciousness. This state of awareness facilitates the shamanic journey.
A Shamanic Journey to the Lower world.
To begin, find a place that you feel comfortable and will not be disturbed for about 30 minutes. When you are ready, lie down comfortably, and darken the room, or at least cover your eyes. It is easier to journey in non-ordinary reality in the dark. Remove tight clothing, take off your shoes and allow your breathing to move to a gentle rhythm. Relax for a few minutes, focusing on being centred, and grounded.
When you are ready visualise or imagine, a place which reminds you of the Earth, a place which you know of. This place should be a real place, perhaps somewhere you have visited, or seen in a film or photograph, and it can be anywhere, a hill, mountain, grasslands, forest, by the ocean. At this place allow yourself to perceive an entrance or opening into the Lower world. This entrance can be a hollow tree, an animal burrow, a cave entrance, a man-made opening e.g.; a trapdoor, it can any entrance into the ground or water. You will find that the right entrance will feel comfortable to you, take a minute or so to study it in detail.
Now when you are ready, enter into the opening. The beginning of the tunnel may appear dark, it may angle down in a slight incline, or it may incline steeply. The tunnel may appear to be ribbed, and often it bends, sometimes it may become spiral-like, but it will always lead downwards.
Continue down the tunnel until you come out of doors into a landscape. If you come into a cavern, you will need to move outside and into the landscape, there will be an exit for example a door or an opening which will enable you to do this, it should be easy to get sight of it.
Now in the landscape, just look around. It may be daytime, night-time, forest, woodland, or near water. Extend your senses, listen, can you hear anything, the sound of birdsong, the sound that the wind makes as it blows through the tree tops, perhaps the sound of running , flowing water. Feel the ground underneath your feet, feel the ground pushing up against the soles of your feet. Sense the wind, the breeze, sense the movement of air around you. What does it feel like? Have an awareness of being there.
If you want to explore the landscape, remember where the entrance is, keep track of where you go. Just as in any ordinary-reality journey, it helps if you keep a note of landmarks so you can retrace your steps to return.

Technical information
The drumming was recorded live directly onto digital tape at Sync City recording studio in London. The drumming was played in the 'live-sound' studio and no sound modification process was used.
Both drums were single headed frame drums. For the double drumming track, both drums were held facing each other in a position to optimise the natural reverberation.
The recording engineer was Wan Hewitt, himself a professional drummer. He has been dubbed the 'drummers darling' due to the great live sound he gets.

Pro Tools Studio - How to Build a Killer Pro Tools Studio on Short Money
I get the calls all the time, "Buster I'm building a studio... what should I buy."
Well truth be told my buddies in the manufacturing industry might not like what I suggest, because I am going to steer you away from normal choices. Ill give you the same advice I give them and that is to get nose out of the Musicians Friend catalog. Once that is done we can then find a great solution that will work for your unique purposes and get you the biggest bang for the buck.
New Shiny Gear!!
Ok, the allure of unpacking a piece of new gear from its bubble wrap may be exciting but if you really want to get the biggest bang for your buck you are going to have to piss off those big-box retailers like Guitar Mart, and start scouring Ebay and Craigslist.
There are some great pieces of gear that have tons of life that won't break the bank.
The end use must be kept in mind. For instance if you are going to run a commercial multi-tracking facility then you will want something completely different than if you are simply composing your own songs.
Consider your requirements honestly and see if a used 002 may work for you . People are unloading them all the time as they upgrade. It has practically the same features as the new rigs with much less cost. Save the money and use it to buy a better microphone, which is really what you need anyway.
If you are considering laying out the bones for a big HD system first consider if you could get by with a 003 expanded. You could buy a nice firewire interface for under a grand to expand your real time tracking capability to a full 18 tracks at a time. And the real bonus, you will be thousands ahead in budget. With a beefy enough computer you can run all the same plugins as the HTDM system but, you will be able to afford more of them.
The Plugin Game
Ok, if you are going to take a project from recording to mixdown in your studio then you are going to need some quality plugins - bottom line. Plugins give you the pallet to create polished and produced sounding mixes. So spend your money wisely. This is also an area where you can pick up some used gems as well. Many of the best plugs are for sale used on Ebay for fractions of their retail price. Purchasing is simply a matter of transferring the iLok asset from the seller to you. It does involve a transfer fee but for the savings on the plugin it is well worth the effort.
The Other Stuff
For all the other gear - you know the boring stuff like mics, stands and headphones - look for used gear as well. But when it comes to critical chain items such as microphones, buy names.
I see way too many people make the amateur mistake of buying no-name gear which is touted to be the same as say a Neumann [ it looks like one after all]. This is a rookie mistake.
You picked Protools because it is what the pros use right? Why shouldn't you make your critical chain (mics, pres compressors) purchase decisions based on the same information. Spend wisely and you will have a piece of gear that serves you well for decades. Spend foolishly and you will waste money by having to upgrade to what you should have purchased the first time.

Canary Mine - LFASB - 08 - Hold You Dear
Canary Mine - Live From A Suburban Basement We set up Carl by the pool table with mikes hanging from the drop-ceiling. Joe stood between two couches. Mim played her keyboards in front of the stand-up piano. I set my amp at the bottom of the basement stairs. We plugged everything into my 8-channel mixer into my 4-channel mixer into my DJ mixer. This was all fed into my computer and recorded using Sound Forge. This stereo recording was recorded live. No multi-track was used. This is a raw, off the floor recording. Drumming for the Shamanic Journey
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is the oldest way in which humanity has sought connection with Creation. The origins of shamanism go back at least 40,000 - 50,000 years to Stone age times. All of us have evolved from shamanic cultures, it is our roots wherever we live.
A shaman knows that all things are alive and 'walks with one foot in the everyday world and one foot in the spirit world'. Contemporary shamanism is the application of these ancient timeless ways to life here and now.
Shamanism is not a belief system. It is a path to knowledge which is gained through experience of life, through rituals, ceremonies, prayers and meditation, trials and tests. Knowledge is something that works, that stands up to the test of time, that is known from the inside.
Cosmology of the shaman
Shamans divide non-ordinary reality into three other regions, the upper, lower and the middle worlds. Each has its own characteristics and whilst each individual traveller experiences initially their own version, once one becomes a proficient journeyer, it is amazing just how connected we all are at these levels.
The Lower world is the place of instinctual knowing where our animal-like powers reside and where we can find practical earthly help and guidance.
The Upper world is the word of spirit teachers, cosmic beings, great wise elders, ancestors who appear usually in human form. Their help and guidance is often perceived to be more general and philosophical.
The Middle world is both the everyday physical world that we live in, the world of ordinary reality, the tonal, and also a parallel non-ordinary version of our world.
It is a CD specifically made for shamanic journeying, and to do this, the drums have to be as monotonous as possible and maintain a consistent beat between 205 to 210 beats per minute. At this specific beat, the brain is stimulated to synthesise natural beta-endorphins which facilitate a person to move into what is known as the 'second attention', an altered state of awareness, or shamanic state of consciousness. This state of awareness facilitates the shamanic journey.
A Shamanic Journey to the Lower world.
To begin, find a place that you feel comfortable and will not be disturbed for about 30 minutes. When you are ready, lie down comfortably, and darken the room, or at least cover your eyes. It is easier to journey in non-ordinary reality in the dark. Remove tight clothing, take off your shoes and allow your breathing to move to a gentle rhythm. Relax for a few minutes, focusing on being centred, and grounded.
When you are ready visualise or imagine, a place which reminds you of the Earth, a place which you know of. This place should be a real place, perhaps somewhere you have visited, or seen in a film or photograph, and it can be anywhere, a hill, mountain, grasslands, forest, by the ocean. At this place allow yourself to perceive an entrance or opening into the Lower world. This entrance can be a hollow tree, an animal burrow, a cave entrance, a man-made opening e.g.; a trapdoor, it can any entrance into the ground or water. You will find that the right entrance will feel comfortable to you, take a minute or so to study it in detail.
Now when you are ready, enter into the opening. The beginning of the tunnel may appear dark, it may angle down in a slight incline, or it may incline steeply. The tunnel may appear to be ribbed, and often it bends, sometimes it may become spiral-like, but it will always lead downwards.
Continue down the tunnel until you come out of doors into a landscape. If you come into a cavern, you will need to move outside and into the landscape, there will be an exit for example a door or an opening which will enable you to do this, it should be easy to get sight of it.
Now in the landscape, just look around. It may be daytime, night-time, forest, woodland, or near water. Extend your senses, listen, can you hear anything, the sound of birdsong, the sound that the wind makes as it blows through the tree tops, perhaps the sound of running , flowing water. Feel the ground underneath your feet, feel the ground pushing up against the soles of your feet. Sense the wind, the breeze, sense the movement of air around you. What does it feel like? Have an awareness of being there.
If you want to explore the landscape, remember where the entrance is, keep track of where you go. Just as in any ordinary-reality journey, it helps if you keep a note of landmarks so you can retrace your steps to return.

Technical information
The drumming was recorded live directly onto digital tape at Sync City recording studio in London. The drumming was played in the 'live-sound' studio and no sound modification process was used.
Both drums were single headed frame drums. For the double drumming track, both drums were held facing each other in a position to optimise the natural reverberation.
The recording engineer was Wan Hewitt, himself a professional drummer. He has been dubbed the 'drummers darling' due to the great live sound he gets.

the guitar at the starting is not connected to any amp i just put it in for fun.. the last part i just play for the hell of it because its fun..really..ahaha Having spent a year and a half touring behind One By One, Grohl did not want to rush into recording another Foo Fighters record. Initially Grohl intended to write acoustic material by himself, but eventually the project involved the entire band.[12] To record its fifth album, the band shifted to Los Angeles and built a recording studio, dubbed Studio 606 West. Grohl insisted that the album be divided into two discs–one full of rock songs, the other featuring acoustic tracks.[10] In Your Honor was released in June 2005. The album's singles included "Best of You", "DOA", "Resolve", "No Way Back", and "Miracle". On June 17, 2006, Foo Fighters performed their largest non-festival headlining concert to date at London's Hyde Park. The band was supported by Juliette and the Licks, Angels & Airwaves, Queens of the Stone Age, and Motörhead. Motörhead's Lemmy joined the band on stage to sing "Shake Your Blood" from Dave Grohl's Probot album. Also, as a surprise performance, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen jammed with Foo Fighters, playing part of "We Will Rock You" as a lead into "Tie Your Mother Down". In further support of In Your Honor, the band decided to organize a short acoustic tour for the summer of 2006. The tour included former member Pat Smear, who rejoined the band as an extra guitarist, Petra Haden on violin ...

Thank you for watching my video. This is me covering Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" because I'm too excited to have the album to stand without doing anything. I want to thank all of GUNS N' ROSES with this video, especially AXL for being GUNS N' ROSES alive. The play in this video is line recording as usual. I didn't know who of the 3 guitarist in the band play which part so I played what I could play. And I think the solo was played by Robin and Ron (in the studio take, the solo was played by Robin and Buckethead) but I'm not a technical guitarist like Bumblefoot so I improvised the 2nd half of the solo.. How to Survive a Horror Gig As a Guitarist
SCENARIO
Joe is a lead guitarist in a covers/remake band. He is a good guitarist and cool under pressure. He plays for a band called the Psycho Nymphos. They are a five piece band with two guitarist, keys, bass and drums. The other guitarist also doubles as the singer. Yet this is Joe's nightmare. As a guitarist, this scenario should induce uncontrollable trembling of all body parts and have you soiling your underwear. This, is the gig from hell.
Thinking that he starts at 10:00, Joe shows up at the venue with two hours to spare. Well, it would be two hours to spare, but Joe got given the wrong information. The Band is due to start at 8:30 and Joe hasn't even unpacked his gear yet, let alone set up. They had been trying to call Joe on his phone, but it was switched off. Joe, keeping cool, unpacks his car in a hurry and somehow manages to get everything set up only 10 minutes late. The crowd is getting restless and the bar manager is furious. Joe is keeping his cool.
No sooner than finishing his finally tune up, the Nymphos start. After another minute of working out what song to play, the Nymphos kick off their first song. It sounds terrible, with Joe's guitar to quiet and bass guitar too loud. The band plays the song half heartedly while they adjust levels and try to get things right. The crowd is wondering what the hell is going on, and the bar manager is wondering who the hell he hired and why. Joe is a little frustrated.
After standing around working out what to play next, the band begins the second song as suggested by the drummer. This one sounds better until the first chorus. Half way through the first chorus... TWANG.... Joe busts a string. Joe makes do for the time being until the solo, when he realizes that the guitar solo is going to be somewhat difficult with only 5 strings. Joe fumbles his way through until the end of the song. Joe is very embarrassed.
The band stands around for a minute or two while Joe replaces the broken string. Once that is done they kick off into the next song. This one goes OK, and the crowd seems to be getting into it a little bit more. The bar manager is starting to relax, and Joe is starting to enjoy himself.
In fact, everyone is enjoying themselves. And their beers. A little too much. The Nymphos are starting to get a little sloppy and starting to miss cues. Especially the singer. He is starting to miss when he is supposed to be coming in, and slurring words. While the boys in the band are finding it hilarious, the crowd are not. Joe is starting to get tipsy.
The next song Joe's guitar starts making funny noises, and the sound starts cutting out. Eventually Joe's guitar disappears. He randomly stomps on some pedals and realizes that there is no power. He was sure those 9 volt batteries were still good. Joe unplugs his guitar lead from the pedal board and plugs it straight into his amp. Joe is getting angry, just like the crowd and the bar manager.
Two songs from the end, the stage goes black. All the amps turn off and all that can be heard is the drummer pounding away. After a few seconds all of the Nymphos are standing around, looking stupid wondering what is going on. About 30 seconds later, the power returns. The band chats quickly and decides to start the song again. This time they get through it all. They play there last song the few remaining patrons, pack up, pick up their check and leave the bar, never to return.
Could it get any worse for Joe and his band, the Psycho Nymphos? I doubt it. But they could have survived all of these problems by being prepared. It may seem insurmountable, but I have played a gig where nearly all of this happened in one night, and we survived. It's all preparation. This is what you need to do to survive this nightmare.
ALWAYS STAY IN CONTACT
There is no excuse to be late to a gig. With today's modern communications technology, everyone has the potential to be contactable all of the time. Even if Joe got the time wrong, a simple phone call would have solved all the problems. However, it is always a great idea for a band to meet at a central location at some point before a show, and travel together "convoy" style if possible. This is a sure fire way to make sure everyone arrives on time, doesn't get lost, or can get assistance if something does go wrong.
The spill over effect of this is that when you arrive on time, you can take your time and set up properly, sound check, as well as check your equipment for problems and in general, relax before the show starts.
KNOW WHAT SONG COMES NEXT
Unless you are some freeform jam rock improv jazz type thing, you need to know what you are going to play. Every member of the band should know what song is coming next so they can prepare for it without having to debate first what song to play in the first place. Have a set list in sight for every member of the band. Know in advance what songs may require guitar changes or change of tuning so that you don't kick off the tune until everyone is ready. Moments like that are easily filled with some banter, usually between the singer and the audience.
ALWAYS KEEP A SPARE
It's not always possible, but you should aim to have a backup guitar ready to go at all times. This is especially true for a band with two guitarists like the Nymphos. With the second guitarist still playing, and your backup guitar primed for playing, it is more than feasible to switch guitars mid song. It takes about 10 seconds and looks very professional. Even if you are the only guitarist, depending on the song you can sometimes get away with it as well. However sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and get through it. Once the song is over you can grab you backup guitar and play the rest of the set without keeping everyone hanging around while you change a string. Change it between sets or if you only have one set then don't bother.
If you can't keep a spare guitar handy and need to change strings, have some backup material. This applies to all band members. You should have a song that can be played when any member of the band is incapacitated. Then any running repairs can be made while the rest of the band covers.
STAY SOBER / CLEAN / STRAIGHT
It doesn't matter what you think, you do not sound better when you are smashed. Sure, maybe to your ears, but not to mine or anyone else's. A few years ago, I remember playing a huge New Years Eve show where there were two bands. There was us playing inside, and the main band playing on the outside stage. The other band I had seen many times before and they were great. In fact they were one of the most popular bands to play this particular venue. In between sets, they were heading up to their rooms, getting stoned and drunk, then coming back down to play their set is a semi comatose state. We were inside, enjoying a few drinks between sets and keeping it together. Our sets overlapped slightly and by the end of the night, whenever both bands were playing, inside was packed and outside the other band was ignored. The following year, we were asked back to play New Years again as the only band. In fact after that New Years gig we were booked regularly to play both nights of the weekend every month (think about that for a second, we were booked for 25% of that venues available shows). It may be fun to get tanked and play, but it won't get you anywhere.
NEVER TRUST A BATTERY
To this day I still cannot believe people run their effects off batteries. It is just a disaster waiting to happen. Sure, I have batteries in my pedals that I swap out every few months. But they are the BACKUP for when some drunken idiot in the crowd falls onto the stage and pulls out a power lead or something similar. Or perhaps you accidentally leave a cable plugged in between sets and the battery drains on you. If you do need to run off battery, work out how long they last and change the battery in half that time. This should help avoid unwanted failures at critical times, and make sure you have extra batteries.
By the way, have you ever heard the sound a Tube Screamer makes when it's failing? It's awful.
WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING ELECTRICITY
There is not a lot you can do about this but ride it out. Although it's not as bad as it sounds. When a venue looses power, you can be sure it will be up in less than minute unless something MAJOR has gone wrong, in which case the venue will normally shut if it is a building wide blackout. So for the next 60 seconds, what do you do? It's easy. Nobody stops. The entire band keeps playing. The singer goes to the front of the stage and starts yelling the lyrics at the crowd. I am yet to see this not work. The crowd will start singing back. When the power kicks back in the band hasn't missed a beat and the crowd will go crazy. It is slick and professional and will fire up the crowd for the rest of the night.
If it goes over the 60 seconds just finish the song and wait. Not much more you can do, but at least you tried.
JUST BE PREPARED
If you are prepared and use common sense, you can cope with any disaster. I personally have had all these issues, besides the drunken stupidity, happen in one night, and we survived by having an escape plan and sticking to it. It's not that hard to come up with your own emergency escape route, and I hope these examples can inspire you to be even more gig ready.
